5 Quick Things: October 2024

Welcome to 5 Quick Things that I saw since last month that I thought were interesting enough to share with you. None of them are particularly timely so feel free to just enjoy 🙂

The Road Has to Change

I don’t think most people are aware that if they’re not disabled right now (and we can argue where the lines are but you can do the mental math to think about where you’d need to be personally to call yourself disabled and stick a flag there, fine by me), they will be some day if they’re lucky enough to live long enough. Well, in this world wherein if a person become disabled enough for society to consider them “useless”, they might not get the chance to live long enough. Climate change is just one of the very many challenges we face made infinitely more difficult because disability is not considered in the equation so maybe, now would be a good time to listen to disabled people and build exit ramps and resources for them. No one doesn’t benefit from resources that help disabled people. A cut curb is useful to people on foot as much as it is to wheelchair users and bikes.

Beauty and Horror in Image

I like to think about photos and what their purpose is but of course some photos are now quite horrifying as we are in the midst of a world plagues by genocide, natural disaster, and a raising tide of fascism so it’s god to stop and think about not just how we take pictures of these horrors but also how we look, think about, and decipher these images.

Slim Waste, Slim Wallet

I don’t always love every video from More Perfect Union but I found this one extremely interesting. We usually think of Ozempic through the lens of what is doing to health systems or people’s bodies or our perception of larger bodies, but this video brings up the point that since the US government does not negotiate the price of drugs, Ozempic and other GLP-1 drugs are being sold at record profit rates at a direct cost of the government. To be honest this probably results in somewhere soon the government not accepting coverage for these drugs and instead either endangering people’s lives due to non-treatment or turning to illicit sources.

The US should definitely not let companies post prices and should be able to negotiate to a reasonable level.

Social Media and the Sale

I’m going to caveat this post with the fact that I usually do not simply post people’s rants but I found this one kind of endearing (even if I don’t 100% agree with the whole thing.) The internet has become a strange beast and it’s past promise could still happen but obviously we’re at a pretty bleak moment wherein a lot of people are simply dissatisfied with the major way they interact with the internet because the internet isn’t even for porn anymore! It’s for buying thing and yelling at people :/ And those are way less good than porn.

Sweater Weather (Mini Edition)

Since this month has been quite heavy I’m going to wrap it up with some mini crafts because everyone knows that if you make something smaller, it’s immediately cuter and usually better. I’m absolutely fascinated by the level of detail that this artist was able to capture in these mini knit sweaters and it does make me curious if I should try knitting again…

That’s all for this month and hopefully I’ll see you back again next month with some more exciting and cool things!
